Kemin Industries

Kemin Industries originates countless ingredients that improve the health and lives of humans, pets and animals. Planning began in 2014 for a new building to house their North American headquarters in Des Moines. Previous experience with on-site foodservice was limited to a coffee kiosk that offered grab and go food options. The design team and user group explored a wide range of foodservice options and operational models before they defined their foodservice vision. The design goal was to create a venue with a sports pub ambiance that encouraged staff to dine, relax, socialize and collaborate in the space.

The ground floor dining room features large windows with green views and the state capitol in the distance. The serving area includes three cooking concepts and a self-served island with soup, salad, deli sandwiches and paninis. The grill station features breakfast and hot sandwiches using a charbroiler, fryer and forward-facing griddle. Rotating menu concepts are offered at a chef station equipped with a forward-facing range for live cooking.

An Italian manufactured stone-hearth oven was key for the sports pub theme. The oven wall was finished with reclaimed brick from Des Moines streets to highlight a local connection. The production kitchen extends behind the serving area with two openings that offer glimpses into the kitchen to emphasize a “made-fresh” message.
